State Treasurer Wants Debt Collection Office To Target Tardy Non-Profits

Treasurer John Kennedy is referring 19 non-governmental organizations that received tax money from lawmakers to the state's new debt collection office because they didn't file required financial reports with the state.

Kennedy wants the Office of Debt Recovery to seek repayment. He said Thursday that he's also referring those noncompliant organizations to the legislative auditor for review to find out what the nonprofits did with the money.

In July, the treasurer said about three dozen organizations that received more than $4 million in tax money in recent years hadn't filed required documents, like quarterly progress reports.

His office sent final demand letters for the documents in August, giving the NGOs until earlier this week to comply. Some organizations have since filed the reports or have worked with the treasurer's office.
