NOFD Veteran To Lead City's Fire Department

Timothy McConnell, a 29-year veteran of the New Orleans Fire Department, has been sworn in as the city's new fire chief.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu administered the oath Wednesday after a news conference where he formally announced McConnell's promotion.

McConnell replaces the retiring Charles Parent.

Parent and Landrieu both praised McConnell for his work to help rebuild and restore fire stations after Hurricane Katrina in 2005; as well as for his leadership during last year's Hurricane Isaac and preparations for this year's Super Bowl.

McConnell takes on his new role at a time when the city has had to cut budgets and reduce personnel.

McConnell said he will place a special emphasis on fire prevention — saying it's more cost effective to prevent a fire than extinguish one.
