N.O. City Council Postpones Tougher Enforcement Of City Property Codes

After discussing and receiving public comments on the Landrieu administration's proposed changes to sections of the City Code governing minimum property standards, two city council committees meeting jointly Monday decided not to make a recommendaton at this time.

Council Vice-President Stacy Head, co-chair of the Housing Committee, decided to reintroduce the ordinances at a later date.

The proposed changes would reinstate and strengthen the enforcement of occupied-building codes that were suspended after Hurricane Katrina.

They were suspended to allow people to move back to New Orleans and live in their storm damaged homes as they rebuilt.

The approach is patterned after the city's "fight against blight".
