The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says snares set for hogs or coyotes caught four Louisiana black bears — three of them cubs — in recent weeks.
The department tried unsuccessfully last year to require that snares in 15 parishes with significant numbers of bears include modifications to let bears escape.
The Louisiana Trappers & Alligator Hunters Association recommends not using snares at all in bear country.
Department biologist Maria Davidson says snares catch whatever comes around, and bears will go after almost any bait.
The trappers group opposed the proposed restrictions.
President Tony Howard says once imposed, they'd remain forever and go statewide because bears will spread statewide.
Wildlife officials are calling for trappers to use other methods in parishes that have large numbers of bears.
