Kenner Police Officer Shoots, Kills Suspect in High-Speed Crash

Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway has released more details about an officer involved shooting Tuesday night that left one man dead and two hospitalized, including the officer.

It began as a drug bust in the parking lot of a gas station on Airline near the 1000 block of Clay Street just before 9pm.

Two undercover narcotics officers approached a vehicle with two suspects inside, including 31 year old Eldrin Smart, the driver who was killed.

When the officer on the passenger side of the vehicle reached into the car to turn off the engine, Smart put the car into reverse and fled down Clay Street with the officer still inside the car.

"After about a two-block exit by the suspects, our officer fired several shots in the vehicle and struck the driver when he was unable to remove the keys from the car as he (Smart) drove at a high rate of speed," Caraway said.

Smart was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other person in the vehicle and the officer were injured and hospitalized.
