A member of the hurricane forecasting team at Colorado State University says they plan to issue an updated forecast for the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season next Friday, August 2nd.
Phil Klotzbach says they issued their first forecast in April and an update in June. The June forecast calls for a very active season.
"We're forecasting a total of 18 named storms, nine of those intensifying into hurricanes, and of those nine, four intensifying into major category 3,4,5 hurricanes on the Saffir-Simpson scale," Klotzbach said.
The August update will take into account two factors:
1. The absence of El Nino, which would favor the development of storms, and
2. Cooler waters in the eastern Atlantic, which could inhibit the development of storms.
