Collision Ends Life Of Covington Triathlete

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain says a 58-year-old triathlete has died, a day after his bicycle and a Jeep Wrangler collided head-on.

He said in a news release Tuesday that Raymond Unland Jr. of Covington died Monday at the Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans.

The accident occurred as he rode his bicycle in a subdivision just outside the city about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Deputies have not cited the 16-year-old driver, whose name has not been released because of his age.

Capt. George Bonnett says deputies don't think alcohol or speed played a part in the crash, but the accident is still under investigation.
