Today is All Saints Day, or the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church.
All Catholic Church parishes in the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be hosting Masses today.
Archbishop Gregory Aymond will celebrate Mass at 10am at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 4640 Canal Street. Blessing of the graves will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery.
Aymond will also say Mass and bless graves at 3pm at All Saints Mausoleum.
The tradition on All Saints Day of cleaning family gravestones and leaving fresh flowers is especially strong in New Orleans.
"We're very, very proud of the custom that we have in the New Orleans area, and that is to visit the tombs and the graves of our family and friends," Aymond said.
Also on the archbishop's schedule today, but not related to All Saints Day, is a candlelight vigil at 6pm at the site of a proposed Planned Parenthood Clinic on Claiborne Avenue. Aymond says the clinic is a concern because it will provide abortion services.
"Planned Parenthood, although they do some things that are helpful and acceptable, they also perform abortions and it's one of the things that they do widely," Aymond said.
The vigil is sponsored by Louisiana Right to Life.
