A 4th Danziger Bridge Defendant Seeks Release From Prison

A fourth former New Orleans police officer is seeking his release from prison pending a retrial on charges stemming from deadly shootings on a bridge following Hurricane Katrina.

A court filing Thursday by a lawyer for former Sgt. Robert Gisevius asks U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt to free him on bond.

Three other former officers who were convicted of civil rights violations in the Danziger Bridge shootings made the same request in separate court filings on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Engelhardt hasn't ruled on any of them yet, but he has set bond for a fifth former officer convicted of orchestrating a cover-up to make the shootings appear justified.

The judge threw out their convictions in September and ordered a new trial, citing allegations of "grotesque" prosecutorial misconduct in the case.
